English Proficiency Exams
It
is a must for applicants to submit a score report form concerning
an English proficiency exam accepted by METU (METU-EPE that is offered
by METU; TOEFL offered by ETS; IELTS, CPE, CAE and FCE offered by the
British Council). KPDS and ÜDS reports are not accepted. Fill the
information and scores regarding the English proficiency exam in the
relevant field(s) in the online application form. Attach your r score
report to your application material. Minimum scores with respect to the
English proficiency exams required by the individual departments are
available in the Departmental Requirements
section.
The English proficiency
exams are valid for two years. Therefore, the score reports should be
valid as of the date of application. However, those who were registered
in a graduate program at METU for at least one term during the previous
four terms, are not required to submit a report of English proficiency
exam and can register directly to the program, provided that they
satisfy the English requirement of the new program, for which they have
received acceptance. But during the application process, the applicant
must submit the score report used in the previous application.
In
the application process, the previous KPDS and ÜDS reports of those,
who have been registered in a graduate program at METU for at least one
term in the previous four terms, will be valid. Since there is no KPDS
or ÜDS option in the online application form, the applicants must
choose TOEFL option, type 222 as the exam application number, enter the
KPDS or ÜDS scores, mention this information within the letter of
intention and attach the copies of each KPDS or UDS score reports to
the application material.
Those applicants,
who do not meet the minimum requirements of the English Proficiency
Exam determined by the individual departments, must provide a
sufficient score, preferably of METU-EPE.
Please see the Equivalence Chart of METU-EPE and other English Proficiency Exams.
Graduate Exams
In
order to be able to submit an application, you must have a score for
either LES/ALES or “GRE General.” Some individual departments require
GMAT score report. Information on the departmental requirements about
the exam types and minimum scores is available in the Departmental Requirements
section. Attach a copy of your score report to the application
material. If you have registered to take GRE, your application report
will consist of the print-out of the e-mail sent by ETS.
The applicants,
who intend to apply to PhD on BA/BS program, must have a minimum score
of 60 from LES, 70 from ALES and a cumulative GPA of 3.00/4.00 or
80/100. The scores are valid for two years. Therefore, make sure that
your score report is valid as of the date of application. However,
those, who have received an MA/MS degree at METU and who apply to a PhD
program after a maximum interval of one term, can reuse the
ALES/LES/GREreport used during the previous MA/MS application, provided
that this score satisfies the ALES/LES/GRE requirement of the PhD
program. These applicants are not required to take the ALES/LES/GRE
exam again.
Letters of Recommendation
Two
letters of references are to be submitted only if the concerned
department requests it. If you are to apply to a MA/MS program, it is
recommended that you ask for these letters of references from faculty
members (the professors from whom you have taken the highest number of
courses) at the last school you attended as a full-time student. If you
are to apply to a PhD program, ask for a letter from your thesis
advisor and one from a faculty member (and/or a member of your thesis
examining committee member). If you cannot receive references from your
faculty members, you can request them from former employers who may
comment on your academic potential for graduate work. For the
preconditions about the departmental requirements on the letters of
recommendation, see Departmental Requirements.
Fill in the upper section of the print-out of the recommendation form.
Letters of recommendation should be returned in a signed and sealed
envelope. Write your name and the applied program on the upper-left
corner of the envelope. Submit the envelope and the recommendation form
to the recommender. Attach signed and sealed envelopes to the
application material.
The recommender may request to send the letter of recommendation
directly to the Graduate School. In such a case, inform the recommender
about the application deadlines and ensure the delivery of your
letter(s) of recommendation in due time. The Graduate School of Social
Sciences does not bear any responsibility for late references.

The
Graduate School of Social Sciences requires either an official
university transcript bearing the seal of the institution and the
signature of the registrar, or a transcript certified by a Notary.
Photocopies are not acceptable.
In PhD applications, both bachelor’s and master’s transcripts are required.

the applied graduate program. Explain your objectives and targets with
respect to the graduate study, research field(s) of interest, and your
relevant background. Indicate your honor(s), scholarship(s),
publications, conference articles etc., if any.
The
applicant may either fill out the letter of intention in the relevant
section of the application form, or submit it separately. In this case,
the applicant must state in the relevant section of the application
form that the letter of intention is attached.
